Frequently Asked Questions About Submitting Music Videos

Subtitle

  • How many music videos can I submit?
A: As many as you would like. However, the submission fee is per video submitted.
  • Will my submitted video be played at the competition / be on the DVD?
A: We cannot guarantee either. Both forms must be submitted and signed, or the video will be ignored. Also, depending on number and quality of submissions, there will probably be some elimination of videos to keep the competition to an interesting length.
  • What are the acceptable formats to submit in?
    A: In order of preference
    Tape submissions: MiniDV, Digital-8, Hi-8.
Data submissions: Final Cut Pro, DV (.dv), Quicktime (.mov).
Ask about other formats before submitting.
  • Should I put Song, Band, and Director information at the beginning or end of the video?
A: Submitted videos should not have any information overlays. We will add overlays for both the competition as well as the DVD to keep the look consistent.
  • Would you consider putting commentary tracks by the band or director on the DVD?
A: We would love to, but don't have time to do them ourselves. If you submit a commentary track, we would love to include it.
  • What will be the aspect ratio of the DVD/Competition?
A: The aspect ratio of the majority of the submissions will be used. All other videos will be letterboxed to fit. Expect 4:3 for the next year or two, then maybe expect 16:9? We'll see what the future holds. Video at any size other than 720 x 480 will be resized, so it's in your own interest to give it to us properly sized.
  • Can I submit a video that I made for a U2/White Stripes/Green Day/etc. song?
A: Not unless you get signed permission from the right's holder ON OUR musician's release form. Every video submitted requires a release form from the director, and one from the musician. This is about independent directors and independent music. Fuck the big famous people and do a video for your friends band or a local band you don't even know!

  • Can I still submit or sell my music videos elsewhere?
A: Damn right you can. You're giving us a non-exclusive license. That means that you are giving us rights, without losing any of your own!
  • Where should I send my films?
